Sixty, Ninety or Two Hours? Choosing Your Massage Length
It is the question everyone asks and almost nobody gets a straight answer to. Sixty minutes, ninety, or two hours? The honest answer is that it depends on the style and on whether it is your first session, but there are clear rules, and getting the length right matters more than most people realise. This guide sets those rules out properly.
The rule for a first session
Ninety minutes. Always, regardless of style. This is the single most useful piece of advice about session length.
The reasoning is arithmetic. The first ten minutes of any session go on the conversation, which you want, because it shapes everything that follows. Another ten go on your body actually letting go, because nobody relaxes on command. That is twenty minutes gone before the session properly begins.
Book sixty minutes and you have forty minutes of actual massage, ending at roughly the point where the benefit starts landing. You leave feeling it was pleasant but somehow too short, and you are right. Book ninety and the same twenty minutes go on settling in, but seventy remain, and the last third is where the real release tends to happen.
When sixty minutes is genuinely enough
Once you know what you like, and your body settles into a session faster because it recognises the routine, sixty minutes becomes a perfectly good length for certain styles.
A sensual massage works well at an hour, because it is calm from the start and does not have a long build to it. A body to body massage similarly works at sixty minutes for a returning client. These are the styles where an hour genuinely suffices, once you are past your first visit.
The key phrase is “once you know what you like.” On a first visit, even these styles benefit from ninety minutes, because the settling-in time is the same regardless of style.
The styles that need ninety minutes
Some styles simply do not work at sixty minutes, and it is worth knowing which before you book.
A nuru massage needs ninety at an absolute minimum, because a shower before and after is part of the session. Book an hour and a meaningful chunk of it is spent showering rather than being massaged. For nuru, two hours is common among clients who have been before.
A tantric massage also really wants ninety minutes even for regulars, because it builds. The breathing at the start, the slow deepening through the middle, the release towards the end: that arc does not fit into an hour without feeling rushed. An erotic massage is similar, for the same reason.
When two hours makes sense
Two hours is not necessary for most sessions, but there are situations where it is the right call.
For nuru, if you want the session to feel genuinely unhurried rather than efficient. The showers take time, and two hours lets the massage itself breathe.
For anyone who takes a long time to unwind. Some people know from experience that they need a good half hour before they properly let go. If that is you, two hours means the settling-in time does not eat into the session.
For a session you are treating as a genuine event rather than a quick reset. Sometimes the point is to spend the time, not to be efficient with it.
What the settling-in time actually is
It is worth understanding why the first twenty minutes matter, because it explains the whole logic of session length.
Nobody relaxes on demand. You cannot decide to be relaxed because a clock has started. The nervous system needs time to register that it is safe, that nothing is required of you, and that it can stand down. That process takes roughly twenty minutes for most people, and it takes longer if you arrived stressed from a difficult journey.
This is why booking a room close to where you already are matters, and why arriving flustered undermines a session. The settling-in time is not optional, and anything that lengthens it eats into the part you actually came for.
How to think about the cost
People book sixty minutes to save money, and on a first visit it is usually a false economy.
Think of it this way. If forty of your sixty minutes are the only truly useful part, you are paying a certain amount for forty minutes of benefit. Ninety minutes gives you seventy useful minutes for a smaller increase in price than you might expect. Per minute of actual benefit, ninety is often better value than sixty, not worse.
That does not mean always book the longest option. It means, on a first visit, do not book the shortest one to save money, because you will very likely leave feeling short-changed and conclude that massage is not for you, when the real problem was the length.
A simple summary
First session, any style: ninety minutes.
Returning client, sensual or body to body: sixty is fine.
Nuru, ever: ninety minimum, two hours if you can.
Tantric or erotic, even as a regular: ninety, because they build.
Anyone who takes a long time to unwind: ninety or two hours, whatever the style.
That is the whole of it. When in doubt, ninety minutes is almost never the wrong answer, and sixty is the one people most often regret.
What about back-to-back or double sessions?
Some clients ask about booking two styles in one visit, or a much longer single session. It is possible, and for the right person it works well, but it is worth thinking about before you book.
A two-hour session split between, say, a relaxation style and something more immersive gives each half enough room, provided you have discussed the plan when booking so the therapist can pace it. What does not work is trying to cram two full experiences into ninety minutes; you end up rushing both and enjoying neither.
If you are curious about combining styles, describe what you have in mind when you call. The team will tell you honestly how much time it realistically needs, rather than selling you a session that will feel hurried.
Does the style change how the time feels?
It does, and this is worth understanding. A sensual session is calm from the first minute, so the time feels even and unhurried throughout. A tantric or nuru session builds, so the early part can feel slow and the later part can feel like it passes quickly, precisely because that is when the release happens.
This is another reason the building styles want more time. If the best part of the session is the final third, cutting the session short removes exactly the part you came for. With a style that is even throughout, the cost of a shorter booking is smaller, though still real on a first visit.
